Today, I interacted with the villagers and have visited their fields. The crops have withered and there is very little hope of recovery. Farmers are selling livestock and also the grass. The difficult times are ahead.

Seasonal rainfall short by 54 per cent : IMD

Mumbai, Jun 27 : The cumulative rainfall during the current southwest monsoon across the country was 54 per cent below the Long Period Average (LPA), with the precipitation between June one and 25 being only 56.4 mm, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

Even as farmers were gazing the sky awaiting the monsoon to wet their farmlands, central parts of the country was the worst-affected with a shortfall of 60 per cent as they received only 34.8 mm of rainfall.

The Southern Peninsula saw a precipitation of 88.7 mm with the departure from the LPA being minus 29 per cent. The situation in northwest India and northeast India saw a shortfall of 50 and 55 per cent respectively, with rainfall received in northwest being 22.4 and that of northeast 127.7 mm.

On the current status of monsoon, the IMD said rainfall was excess/normal in six and deficient/scanty in 30 out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions.

The monsoon, which took a break for more than a week after keeping up its date with the Kerala coast, has now further advanced into most parts of Maharashtra (including Mumbai), southern parts of Gujarat, remaining parts of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, southern parts of Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and some more parts of Orissa.

A recent regional finer grained climate model from researchers at Purdue University confirms what global climate models have been telling us for some time. That monsoon patterns will change both in the timing of the advent of rains and in the amount of precipitation. The map below shows the across-country expected changes in both these parameters. The basic lessons from these studies are that: 1) the country will get hotter 2) rainfall pattern will be more unpredictable 3) rains will be concentrated in shorter more intense bursts 4) periods of drought will last longer 5) overall, regions which experience less rainfall can expect even less rainfall, those that experience a lot of rain can expect little change or an increase in rain.

Rainfall trend and impact on farmers ?!

The monsoon rains have arrived, but farmers have concerns in parts of Andhra Pradesh State, India, that is because of the following reasons:

The IMD has declared that this year monsoons would arrive earlier than normal time, the farmers have gone for seeding immediately after the first showers, with more confidence.

There is a gap of 10 to 12 days now after the seeding has been done. During this period some parts experienced hot days, which resulted in spoiling of the seed ("like boiling of the seed" the term used by the farmers). About 25% to 50% of the seed is already lost, due to the above affect and non-continuity of a considerable shower in the last 10 to 12 days.

Farmers are worried if the rains does not fall in the next few days, there would be major losses.

Some farmers have contingency plans to re-sow in place of spoilt seeds and if required they would also plough the field again and sow.

Some farmers have also resorted to rituals with frogs and poojas for good rains.
